Google gives eligible nonprofits two programs that matter for video: the YouTube Nonprofit Program, which adds fundraising and linking tools to your channel, and Google Ad Grants, which provides free search advertising that can drive people to your video landing pages. This directory lists the current requirements and benefits, verified on Google's own help pages in October 2026, plus how to put your videos to work inside each program.
Key facts
- Both programs require an approved Google for Nonprofits account; eligibility is verified by Google's partner Goodstack, typically in 2 to 14 business days (Google).
- Government entities, hospitals and health care organizations, and schools or universities are ineligible, though their charitable foundations or philanthropic arms can qualify (Google for Nonprofits eligibility).
- The YouTube Nonprofit Program's headline benefit is Link Anywhere cards that send viewers to your external campaign pages (YouTube Help).
- YouTube Giving (the Donate button and fundraisers) is only available to US 501(c)(3) public charities; private foundations are not supported (YouTube Help).
- Google Ad Grants provides up to $10,000 per month in in-kind text ads on Google Search. Video and image ads are not included (Ad Grants FAQ).
Google for Nonprofits: eligibility
- Status: a nonprofit charitable organization in good standing that meets your country's requirements. In the US, that means IRS 501(c)(3) status or a group-exempt affiliate; fiscally sponsored projects without their own 501(c)(3) are not eligible (Google).
- Countries: Google lists 185 supported countries and regions; not every product is available in every country (Google).
- Verification: Goodstack confirms legal status. Keep your registration documents, website and domain email consistent to avoid delays.
YouTube Nonprofit Program
How to join
- Sign in to your Google for Nonprofits account as the admin.
- Find "YouTube Nonprofit Program" and select Get Started.
- Submit your organization's YouTube channel ID. It must be clearly identifiable as your organization's channel. Google notes that changing the channel ID later is permanent, so choose your main channel.
- Expect review in 2 to 14 business days (Google).
Benefits
- Link Anywhere cards to drive viewers to donation, petition and volunteer pages.
- Guidance on optimizing content and dedicated technical support for program partners.
- Channel features like branding watermarks, channel permissions and Brand Accounts (Google).
YouTube Giving: the Donate button
- Nonprofit eligibility: a US-registered 501(c)(3) public charity with Google for Nonprofits membership that has opted into online fundraising through GuideStar (YouTube Help).
- Who can run fundraisers: creator channels with at least 10,000 subscribers, in the YouTube Partner Program, not set as made for kids, and based in one of 40 supported locations (YouTube Help).
- How money moves: viewers donate through a Donate button on videos or live streams; Network for Good distributes funds, YouTube covers transaction fees and 100% of contributions go to the nonprofit. Payouts are monthly and can take up to two months.
- If you can't use Giving: Google suggests using end screens to link to an external fundraiser page.
Google Ad Grants: requirements
- Budget: up to $10,000 USD per month in text ads on Google Search; unused funds don't roll over.
- Bidding: every campaign must use Maximize conversions, Maximize conversion value, Target CPA or Target ROAS (Smart Campaigns excepted). These strategies can bid above the program-level $2.00 max CPC (Ad Grants policy; Google tips).
- Performance: maintain a 5% click-through rate each month; two consecutive months below can lead to temporary deactivation.
- Conversion tracking: required, with at least one conversion recorded per month.
- Structure: at least 2 ad groups per campaign and at least 2 unique sitelink assets; pause keywords with quality score 1 or 2; avoid single-word keywords except permitted exceptions (compliance guide).
- Website: a domain you own, served entirely over HTTPS, with substantial original mission content and limited commercial activity (website policy).
- Annual survey: all grantees must complete it to stay in the program.
How to use video inside each program
Turn Ad Grants traffic into video-led conversions
Ad Grants can't run video ads, but it can send searchers to pages where video does the persuading. Build landing pages for high-intent searches ("donate to clean water," "volunteer with foster youth near me") with a 60 to 90 second story video above the fold and a single action below it. Track the donation or sign-up as your conversion, which also satisfies the program's conversion requirement.
Make YouTube a fundraising channel, not an archive
- Add a Link Anywhere card at the emotional peak of each story video, not only at the end.
- Pair each long video with Shorts cut from the same shoot and point them to the full story.
- If you are a US public charity, recruit creators with 10,000+ subscribers who care about your cause to run YouTube Giving fundraisers, and supply them with b-roll and a short ask video.
- Schedule giving-season uploads early so Giving Tuesday and year-end appeal content has time to collect views.

Common mistakes that cost nonprofits these benefits
- Applying under the wrong entity. A hospital or university applying directly will be declined. Apply through the foundation or philanthropic arm with its own registration.
- Linking the wrong YouTube channel. Because a channel ID change is permanent, connect the official organizational channel, not a campaign or staff channel.
- Sending Ad Grants clicks to a homepage. Generic pages hurt click-through rate and conversions. Point each ad group to a page built for that search, ideally with a short video and one clear action.
- Skipping conversion tracking. Without at least one tracked conversion a month, the account falls out of compliance. A completed donation, volunteer sign-up or newsletter subscription all count when configured as conversions.
- Treating video as a one-off. One annual video won't sustain a channel. Plan a shoot that yields a hero story, three to five short cuts and a thank-you video for donors.
To measure what each video contributes, use the benchmarks in our nonprofit video metrics guide.
