Bridging Health Gaps Globally: Partners for World Health in Action
In this inspiring episode of the Are You Happy Podcast, we sit down with Laura Nilsson, Director of Global Programs at Partners for World Health, a nonprofit based in Portland, Maine that’s transforming the way surplus medical supplies are managed in the U.S.—and around the world.
A Mission That Saves Lives
PWH collects unused medical equipment and supplies from hospitals, clinics, and individuals, preventing them from ending up in landfills. Instead, these life-saving materials are redistributed to underserved communities across over 10 countries, including Ukraine, Kenya, DRC, and Guatemala. Each 40-foot container holds around 20,000 pounds of essential healthcare equipment—reaching communities with little to no access to proper medical care.

Local & Global Impact
While the global efforts are monumental, PWH also makes a big difference at home. From walkers to nebulizers, they provide patients in Maine with affordable or free medical equipment—empowering individuals to recover, move freely, and live with dignity.
Sustainability Meets Humanitarianism
In 2024 alone, PWH diverted over 555,000 pounds of medical surplus from the waste stream. Programs like the Blue Wrap Project Runway creatively repurpose medical materials like surgical wraps into stunning fashion, raising awareness and funds for the cause.
Powered by Volunteers
With over 41,000 hours of volunteer time in 2024, PWH is deeply rooted in community service. Volunteers sort, clean, and pack supplies—knowing their work has a direct global impact. Through educational programs, internships, and recognition events, the organization fosters a deep culture of purpose, learning, and sustainability.
