Bridging Cultures Through Music: Inside Musical Bridges Around the World

On this episode of the Are You Happy? podcast, we had the privilege of speaking with Sahil from Musical Bridges Around the World (MBAW), a nonprofit based in San Antonio, Texas, that’s proving music can do more than entertain. It can educate, heal, unite, and inspire.

Since its founding in the late 1990s by a pianist from the former Soviet Union, MBAW has dedicated itself to using free global arts programming to build community, challenge stereotypes, and celebrate our shared humanity.

Music Without Borders

MBAW brings together classical, jazz, folk, and chamber musicians from around the world, including conflict zones like Israel-Palestine, Russia-Ukraine, and Syria, for collaborative performances that transcend politics and culture.

These 130+ annual events—from concerts in San Fernando Cathedral to international piano competitions, are free and open to the public, making high-quality art accessible regardless of income.

‍Music Meets Education

MBAW isn’t just about performance, it’s about impact. Through programs that integrate music into STEM education, children gain new insights into subjects like math and physics. One example Sahil shared: a Syrian refugee student found confidence and connection through music that linked back to her cultural roots.

Music That Moves Us, Literally

MBAW also brings music to those often forgotten, seniors, military veterans, and the disabled. From a woman who stood and danced with joy despite her mobility aids, to elderly veterans forming friendships through music, the emotional and physical benefits of their outreach are profound.

Keeping Free Arts Alive

Offering world-class programming at no cost comes with its challenges. MBAW is sustained through grants, donations, and memberships, and is exploring social enterprise partnerships and a long-term endowment to remain sustainable.

“We believe the arts are a right, not a privilege, and we’ll do whatever it takes to keep them accessible to all.” – Sahil

What’s Next for MBAW?

  • International Piano Competition: With a twist, this one rewards improvisation and creativity.
  • Unity Fest 2026: A nationwide cultural celebration timed with America’s 250th anniversary.
  • Expanding Cultural Series: Showcasing Indian, Persian, Armenian, and more global traditions.
  • Youth Scholarships: Creating performance opportunities and mentorship for aspiring musicians.

Why It Matters

MBAW exemplifies how music is not only a universal language, but also a social equalizer. Their model, offering free programming, embedding arts in schools, and reaching underserved communities—serves as a blueprint for how arts can foster unity, wellness, and learning across borders and generations.

From classrooms to cathedrals, MBAW is building bridges, one note at a time.
